PostSubject: Objectivity VS Subjectivity   Wed Nov 20, 2013 12:39 am

Dictionary Definition (Source: Google):

Ob·jec·tive

Adjective

1. Not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.

Sub·jec·tive

Adjective

1. Based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.

Discussion:

When it comes to discussing and reviewing content, there seems to be a great gap in terms of what people consider appropriate to use. Subjectivity is more often than not considered applicable by the majority of the population in terms of serious criticism (from what I've seen anyways). Objectivity is more often than not shoved aside because it's easier to just say "Well, I like this so that's why it's good."

But can something be both objectively bad and subjectively good? My opinion is yes. A while back, I wrote a review on a website for Pokemon Red / Blue. I scored it at a three out of five. People were wondering why I gave it a lower score than what is usually given to it. I tried to explain that even though my subjective enjoyment of the game was a five, my objective review of the game and its construction was a three. People seemed to think that I was required to input my subjective viewpoint into a review.

There's one major problem I had with this, and that's that reviews (looking to rate something based on its quality) should not be subjective. If they were subjective, they would be based on how you enjoyed the game.

For example:

Subjective Statement: I really like Pokemon Red because of the MissingNO glitch!

Objective Statement: While the numerous glitches in the game don't harm any component except for the hall of fame display, it still goes to show that careful Q and A testing wasn't applied pre-release.

So my questions are; why do people think that it's OK to put subjective viewpoints in an objective review, why do people think that their subjective viewpoint on something is worth insulting an objective review of the game that focuses on how it's constructed.

Is it a matter of people just not being happy with seeing other viewpoints on their favorite material? Or is it because people just don't want to see reviews with just the objective technicalities of something.

Personally I think it's just that people can't handle other opinions, but that's just me. What do you guys think?

That may be part of it, but I'd think that another part may just be that when you point out the flaws in something that another person loves they can't look at it in the same light again. Where they may still enjoy it, they can't help but think of the things that were brought to light. It's kind of like knowing something really gross/bad/dirty about the most innocent-looking girl in your class.

I can see where you're coming from. But in the case of music / games / anything that can be reviewed in a media style fashion I don't feel that applies. For example when I listen to Black Veil Brides. I know they abuse sweep solos, I know they're slightly overproduced. Someone pointing that out to me doesn't change my perception or my enjoyment of them.

I dunno, man. If you point out certain things in music or in a particular song I will sit there and never hear it the same way.
I mean, I read a parody of a song on tumblr that was hilarious and now I can't help but think of it every time I hear the actual song. ._.

I occasionally do that as well, sometimes I hear off things in music that annoy me. But the thing is, I don't notice them because someone else told me about them. Just because someone says a solo is generic, doesn't mean I'll enjoy the solo any less.

I think it may be different for everyone. If you point out how something sounds/looks really generic or incredibly similar to something else it loses its novelty to me and I'm a little less interested than before.

If that was the case though, everything in existence would lose its novelty. Objectivity is about what something is, subjectivity is your take on it. Subjectivity is saying "I know this is this, but I'm willing to look past that because I like how it sounds."
